BLISCare specifically covers costs related to predictable but unexpected surgical outcomes, which complements but does not replace your malpractice insurance.

BLISCare currently covers a wide range of elective and non-elective surgeries, including bariatric, orthopedic, and cosmetic procedures, among others. We can add new surgical procedures quickly, so please contact us if you have questions about our covered procedures.

Claims are processed through a streamlined system that involves coordination between the patient, surgeon, and BLISCare’s claims team to ensure timely resolution. We currently average 18 days from the date a claim is received to the date the first payment is made.

Ironshore, a division of Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, underwrites the policies, while LRP Insurance Company SPC, Ltd. (a BLISCare subsidiary) and Greenlight Re share the insurance operations, enhancing financial stability and risk management.

Premiums are charged episodically (i.e. for each reported surgery) based on the type of surgery, and the coverage level selected. Most of our surgeons highlight the BLISCare coverage in their quote to patients and help the patient understand the assurance that BLISCare provides as they think about the overall surgical plan.

Yes, surgeons must report each surgery in advance through our easy reporting system, and provide detailed documentation of any complications to facilitate the claims process and ensure coverage.

By offering financial protection, BLISCare reduces patient stress related to unexpected medical bills, allowing them to focus on recovery, which can improve overall outcomes. Surgeons who offer their patients a “surgical satisfaction warranty” using BLISCare report that patients who do experience a surgical complication deepen their trust and satisfaction with their surgeon.

Patients are not authorized to purchase BLISCare policies – only a surgeon or convening organization can be a policy holder for BLISCare. BLISCare does not evaluate pre-existing conditions in patients at all. We work with our covered surgeons and trust their evaluation of patient readiness for a surgery. If the patient is deemed ready for surgery, BLISCare will be available for that procedure regardless of any pre-existing condition.

BLISCare offers training sessions, resources, and ongoing support to help surgeons understand the coverage options and effectively communicate benefits to patients.
